Global awareness of the importance of a healthy diet and its effects on various aspects of health, including brain health, is increasing. A recent study published in Clinical Nutrition, in collaboration with prestigious universities such as Ben-Gurion University and Harvard University, explored the impact of different diets on brain aging.

The Study and Participants

About 300 participants took part in the study, which was part of the DIRECT PLUS trial, one of the longest ongoing studies examining the relationship between diet and brain health. Participants were divided into three groups, each following a different diet for 18 months.

The first group followed a traditional healthy diet, while the second group adhered to a calorie-restricted Mediterranean diet, characterized by low simple carbohydrates, rich in vegetables, and substituting red meat with poultry and fish. The third group followed a green Mediterranean diet, which included green tea and the plant Mankai.

Study Results and the Importance of Proteins

The results showed that levels of certain proteins in the blood were associated with accelerated brain aging. However, these levels decreased in participants who followed the green Mediterranean diet. This protective effect is believed to be due to the anti-inflammatory molecules found in green tea and Mankai.

Researchers stated that studying circulating proteins in the blood provides a dynamic window into understanding how dietary changes affect brain aging processes, offering valuable insights into maintaining cognitive function as we age.

Understanding Brain Aging Processes

Understanding how the brain ages is complex, with many biological and environmental factors at play. The study suggests that changes in blood protein levels can be an early indicator of brain changes before symptoms appear.

This understanding can be used to develop new strategies to maintain brain health and reduce the risk of neurological diseases such as mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease.
