Technical Challenges in Searching for Alien Signals

Despite expanding the search to more stars, there are significant limitations related to time and the frequencies being searched. Radio telescopes like Green Bank and Parkes have been limited in the frequencies they can listen to, which might cause important signals to be missed.

Mason is working to broaden the range of frequencies studied by conducting research with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array in Chile, which operates at higher frequencies. These less noisy frequencies offer a better chance of detecting unexpected signals.

The Benefits of Exploring Different Frequencies

Frequencies known as the ‘water hole’ have always been favored in previous research because they are not affected by Earth’s atmosphere. However, searching at higher frequencies could change the game, as these are less prone to scattering, maintaining signal clarity.

Although no new signals have been found yet, Mason emphasizes the importance of exploring new frequency ranges, which could lead to unexpected discoveries.
