SpaceX launched its giant Starship rocket on its tenth test flight on August 26, 2025. This achievement marks a significant step in the company’s efforts to colonize Mars. The Starship rocket aims to achieve long-term goals, including establishing sustainable life on the Red Planet.

Design and Development of the Starship Rocket

The Starship rocket consists of two main components made of stainless steel: the massive booster known as Super Heavy, and the upper vehicle simply known as Starship or “the ship.” Both stages are designed to be fully and rapidly reusable.

The current version of Starship, known as Version 2, features a height of 397 feet (121 meters) and is powered by 39 Raptor engines, with 33 located in the Super Heavy and 6 in the upper ship. SpaceX aims to develop larger and more powerful versions in the future.

Future Plans for the Starship Rocket

SpaceX plans to launch a new version of Starship known as Version 3 in the near future, which will have a height of 408 feet (124.4 meters). Elon Musk has indicated that a future version will be known as Starship V4, which will stand at 466 feet (142 meters) and will include 42 engines after adding 3 additional Raptor engines.

These new versions are expected to undergo extensive testing in the coming years, with the goal of sending them on missions to Mars by 2026, where uncrewed test flights will begin to assess landing capabilities on the Red Planet.

Technical Challenges and Overcoming Them

Despite the achievements of SpaceX, the company faces significant technical challenges in achieving its long-term goals. One of the main challenges is developing an effective heat shield to protect the vehicle during its entry into the atmospheres of Earth and Mars.

Other challenges include refueling the ship in Earth’s orbit, where the upper stage launches with minimal fuel to save weight for the payload. The ship must rendezvous with multiple tankers in orbit to refuel before heading to its destination.
