For over seventy years, we’ve used underwater cameras to explore the ocean floor, but we’ve only seen a tiny part of it. Exploring the entire ocean floor would take a very long time. However, by focusing on specific areas, we can learn more about these mysterious depths.

The Mystery of the Ocean Depths

The deep ocean is one of the most mysterious places on Earth. Despite using cameras, robotic vehicles, and other technologies to explore these depths, we’ve only captured images of about 0.001% of the ocean floor below 200 meters. This is roughly the size of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. This figure comes from a recent study that analyzed data from 43,681 dives conducted between 1958 and 2024.

Challenges of Exploring Ocean Depths

The deep ocean covers approximately 335.7 million square kilometers, which is about two-thirds of the Earth’s surface. Visual exploration of this vast area takes an incredibly long time. Even with a thousand systems working at a rate of 2.9 square kilometers per year, it would take over 115,800 years to explore the entire ocean floor just once.

Visual exploration relies on cameras to provide direct views of marine life and environmental conditions at these depths. While sonar can map the terrain, cameras are crucial for understanding marine life and its behaviors.

Measuring Coverage in Different Ways

Researchers used two methods to estimate the area covered. The first method calculates the area visible during each activity, while the second is based on the time spent on the ocean floor. These methods produced estimates ranging from 2,130 to 3,823 square kilometers, which is a tiny fraction compared to the total ocean floor area.

The takeaway from these estimates is that current exploration methods are insufficient for a comprehensive picture of the oceans. However, there is hope for improvement by focusing on specific sites rather than trying to capture every centimeter of the ocean floor.

Future Improvements in Exploration

One proposed strategy for improving exploration is to identify 10,000 target sites based on factors like depth and sediment composition. These sites could provide rich information through short videos or still images, significantly increasing the number of covered locations.

Additionally, developing autonomous systems that can operate for longer periods, opening up archives, and directing local exploration efforts could change the pace of ocean exploration and who decides which questions to answer.

Despite efforts to explore the ocean depths, the area we’ve imaged so far is very small. However, focusing on improving exploration techniques and identifying important sites can give us a better understanding of these unknown depths.
