A recent study from Fujita Health University in Japan explored how nighttime lighting affects their sleep. The study found that even low levels of light exposure can significantly disrupt sleep.

The LENS Study and Real-World Light Exposure

The study involved 225 adult patients with schizophrenia, monitoring their sleep patterns and light exposure continuously over a week. Data was collected using bedside light meters and wrist-worn activity trackers to measure movement, sleep cycles, and light exposure.

The results showed that the recorded light levels were low, averaging 1.4 lux with the trackers and 4.1 lux with the light meters. Despite these low levels, there were significant differences in sleep quality between brighter and darker environments.

The Gap Between Self-Awareness and Reality

There was a noticeable gap between the objective data collected by the devices and the patients’ self-reported sleep quality. While the devices showed a marked decrease in sleep quality, there was no clear correlation with the patients’ subjective reports. This discrepancy may be because patients are unaware of the negative impact light has on their sleep.

Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions for Better Sleep

Researchers suggest that adjusting the sleep environment could effectively improve sleep quality without medication. Simple changes like turning off night lights or using blackout curtains can reduce the negative effects of nighttime lighting.
