Exploring the Benefits of Virtual Forest Bathing

With rapid advancements in technology, it is now possible to use virtual reality to recreate natural experiences that may be out of reach for many. Virtual forest bathing is an excellent example of how technology can enhance mental health and foster a connection with nature. In this article, we review a recent study on the effects of virtual forest bathing on mood and memory, and its ability to improve psychological well-being in urban environments and areas with limited access to nature.

Introduction to Virtual Forest Experience

A high-quality 360-degree virtual reality video was produced in the largest pine forest in Europe, the Sonnenberg Nature Reserve near Parchim. The experience was designed to include authentic sounds and the scent of pine essential oils, providing participants with a comprehensive sensory experience. The experience was offered either in full, combining visuals, sound, and scent, or in a reduced form where only one sense was activated in a neutral virtual environment.

The results showed that combining all three sensory stimuli led to greater improvements in mood and a sense of connection to nature compared to presenting individual sensory stimuli. Furthermore, there were limited improvements in working memory, the cognitive function that allows us to store, process, and retrieve information in the short term.

Positive Effects on Mental Health

Updated stress images were used to induce acute stress in over 130 participants before equipping them with virtual reality headsets to experience one of four forest stimulation variations. The results indicated that the combination of the three sensory stimuli led to significant improvements in mood and a sense of connection to nature.

The researchers noted that the effects were specific to the region and cannot yet be considered universally valid. Further studies with larger samples are needed to confirm the findings and gain a better understanding of the mechanisms behind the calming effects of virtual nature experiences.

Potential Applications in Various Environments

While digital experiences cannot replace real nature, they offer a noticeable emotional impact. In places where access to nature is limited, such as clinics, waiting rooms, or urban areas, multi-sensory virtual reality applications or targeted natural arrangements can support psychological well-being.

Natural images, sounds, and scents offer untapped potential to improve mood and mental performance in everyday situations. Research has shown that simply watching nature videos can reduce patients’ perception of physical pain.

Conclusion

This study demonstrates that virtual forest bathing can have a positive impact on psychological well-being and connection to nature, especially when multiple senses are activated simultaneously. These possibilities open the door to using technology to improve mental health in environments lacking nature, enhancing the quality of life for individuals in various settings.
