In a NASA press conference, researchers revealed a new study showing how Perseverance discovered intriguing minerals on the western edge of Jezero Crater, in clay-rich rocks in the valley known as “Neretva Vallis.” These minerals are typically considered to result from microbial metabolic processes that consume organic materials, according to Joel Horowitz, a planetary scientist at Stony Brook University.

Although these discoveries may suggest the presence of ancient life, scientists emphasize the need for further analyses to accurately determine the origin of these minerals and whether they are indeed signs of life or the result of inorganic processes.

Complex Chemical Interactions on Mars

The new findings reveal that Mars experienced complex chemical interactions in the past, whether organic or not. A new study showed that Perseverance collected samples containing interesting minerals in a formation known as “Bright Angel” on the northern side of Neretva Vallis.

The rocks known as “Schiaparelli Falls” are of significant interest to researchers. Detailed studies of the samples showed that these rocks contain small nodules and points rich in iron phosphate and iron sulfide, which are impurities associated with organic carbon, indicating they formed after sediment deposition under low-temperature conditions.
