That is not retreat. It is reallocation toward categories with clearer economics.

This shift makes sense. A product becomes durable when it integrates into work people already do, not when it asks them to adopt an entirely new behavior for occasional entertainment. Coding assistants, internal enterprise copilots, research tools, customer-support systems, legal drafting aids, financial analysis workflows — these products do not need to become cultural phenomena. That is why developer tools have become such an important proving ground. When engineers use an AI system every day to write, refactor, debug, document, or reason through architecture, the value is measurable. It saves time. It reduces friction. When Governments Start Shaping the Market

Government attention can accelerate development, especially when public policy channels funding, procurement, or legitimacy toward certain technologies. But it also introduces distortions. Once states begin treating a technology as strategically critical, markets stop functioning as purely commercial sorting mechanisms. The Public Mood Has Changed
