Young Canadian Discovers New Asteroids
In the vast and mysterious world of space, new discoveries are always waiting to be made. Among those making these discoveries is 12-year-old Canadian Siddharth Patel, who has identified two new asteroids, making him one of the youngest Canadians to achieve such a feat.
The Discovery Story
Siddharth’s journey began when he joined a citizen science program in collaboration with NASA, where he was able to spot two potential asteroids in September. The asteroids, named 2024 RX69 and 2024 RH39, have been listed with the Minor Planet Center, a branch of the International Astronomical Union responsible for tracking and recording small celestial bodies.
Siddharth notes that his love for space started at the age of five when he began using a telescope, encouraged by his parents who do not have a scientific background. Siddharth says, “Space wasn’t taught in schools, so I became interested in space after school, which is when I pursue my interests and dreams.”
Future Ambitions
While it may take a decade to confirm the orbits of the discovered asteroids, Siddharth has another major project in mind: becoming an astronaut. He recently joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets to learn how to fly planes, following in the footsteps of notable Canadian astronauts like Jeremy Hansen and Chris Hadfield.
Through international collaboration in astronomical research, Siddharth used images from the Pan-STARRS facility in Hawaii and a sky survey in Arizona to search for asteroids. Although the discovered asteroids are located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, the collaboration can also detect near-Earth asteroids and trans-Neptunian objects.
Recognition and Awards
Siddharth’s achievements are not limited to discovering asteroids. He also won the People’s Choice Award in the 2025 Capture the Dark photography contest organized by DarkSky International. His photograph of comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) alongside the Milky Way was honored.
Siddharth says, “I love taking pictures through my telescopes. When I go to a dark place or a star-filled location, it ignites my imagination. I’ve learned how mysterious space is.”
Conclusion
Siddharth Patel’s story demonstrates how passion and interest can lead to remarkable discoveries in space. His discovery of the asteroids and contributions to astronomy prove that science knows no age limits and that dreams can come true regardless of circumstances.
