Amateur Astronomer Uses AI to Discover New Exoplanet

In Simple Terms

An amateur astronomer used artificial intelligence to find a new planet outside our solar system. This story shows how modern technology can help us discover new worlds in the universe, even if we’re not professional scientists.

AI Powers Amateur Discovery

An amateur astronomer named Pavel Rapstivich used artificial intelligence to discover a new exoplanet. Rapstivich, a product manager living in Spain with a passion for astronomy, analyzed data from NASA’s TESS satellite, which is dedicated to finding planets outside our solar system.

Discovery Details

The discovery began when Rapstivich noticed something unusual in the data he was studying with a machine learning algorithm. The algorithm focused on a star called TIC 4206066, located about 116 light-years away in the Orion constellation. The data showed that the star dimmed for two hours every three days, sparking Rapstivich’s curiosity.

Intrigued by this finding, Rapstivich delved into the TESS archive for more data on the star and found 22 additional dimming events. If confirmed as a planet, this new world could be a “super-Earth,” about 1.4 times the size of Earth, with a scorching surface temperature of 540 degrees Celsius due to its proximity to the star.

Challenges in Verification

Despite the excitement, Rapstivich acknowledges that other factors could cause the star’s dimming. For instance, he noted that dimming events in 2018 coincided with the operation of TESS’s engines, which might affect the results. Therefore, while there is a potential planet signal in the open data, alternative explanations cannot yet be ruled out.

Human and AI Collaboration

Rapstivich emphasizes the importance of AI in his research, using intelligent tools to write code and verify results. However, he was responsible for formulating the scientific question, planning the research, conducting calculations, and deciding on publication.

Yale University astronomer Greg Laughlin describes this as a fantastic example of human-AI collaboration, noting that large language models like Claude and Codex have proven effective in analyzing astronomical literature for overlooked discoveries.

Conclusion

As amateur and professional scientists continue to explore space with modern technology, this new exoplanet discovery highlights how AI can contribute to significant scientific breakthroughs. With further data review and result confirmation, this discovery may soon be added to the official record of exoplanets, expanding our understanding of the universe.
