He used radiocarbon dating but couldn’t go beyond 50,000 years, leaving his theory unproven.

Research continued in the area for decades. Recently, a team of scientists returned with modern dating techniques, such as luminescence dating, which determined the piece to be at least 476,000 years old.

Modern Dating Techniques

Researchers used luminescence dating to determine when the sand grains around the wood were last exposed to sunlight. This method provided accurate age estimates for the wooden pieces, dating them between 453,000 and 499,000 years old.

This discovery changes our understanding of early human artistic capabilities and suggests that using wood in ancient times was more common than previously thought.

Although some media reports described the planks as part of a ‘hut,’ researchers clarified that they might have been part of a wooden platform, walkway, or base for storing food or firewood. The shape of the wood, including marks resembling cutting tools, indicates deliberate shaping rather than natural erosion.
