Devastating Floods Hit Rhodes: A Wake-Up Call for Infrastructure

In Simple Terms

In October 2026, heavy rain caused severe flooding on the Greek island of Rhodes. The floods damaged roads and homes, and sadly, one person died. The local government is asking for emergency help to fix the damage and protect against future disasters.

Massive Rainfall and Its Impact

In October 2026, the Greek island of Rhodes was hit by intense flooding due to heavy rainfall exceeding 264 mm in a short period. This deluge wreaked havoc on the island’s infrastructure, prompting local authorities to request an emergency declaration.

The National Observatory of Athens recorded an astonishing 202 mm of rain in just six and a half hours, leading to widespread flooding. These rains were accompanied by strong electrical storms, with thunderstorms mainly affecting the northern part of Rhodes.

Although the rainfall was extremely high, it did not set a record according to the observatory. Nonetheless, the damage to the island was substantial, with streets inundated and significant infrastructure destruction.

Human and Material Losses

The floods resulted in the tragic death of a 62-year-old man who was swept into the sea in the Stegna area, approximately 30 km from the city of Rhodes. Additionally, four other cars were carried into the sea, highlighting the disaster’s severity.

Emergency teams conducted over 30 rescue and evacuation operations, along with 200 water pumping actions from affected homes and businesses. The most severe damage was concentrated in the Archangelos area and the northern and central parts of the island.

Precautionary Measures and Government Efforts

The Mayor of Rhodes requested the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection to declare a state of emergency to address the extensive damage. While some local news agencies reported that the emergency had already been declared, the government news agency indicated that the request was still pending.

Schools and sports facilities across the island were closed to assess the damage. Traffic was banned on some coastal roads, and municipal bus services were suspended due to the adverse weather conditions.

Conclusion

The floods in Rhodes highlight the vulnerability of infrastructure to natural disasters. The island urgently needs government support to rebuild and protect its residents from future catastrophes. Strengthening infrastructure and emergency planning can help mitigate the impact of future floods.
