A study conducted at an offshore wind farm in the UK observed bird behavior near turbines. The research revealed that most birds steer clear of the turbines by altering their routes, resulting in very few collisions, particularly during daylight hours.

Monitoring Systems in Action

Two turbines at the Thanet wind farm were equipped with advanced radar and camera systems to track bird movements. The cameras recorded video whenever the radar detected potential bird activity, allowing researchers to compile extensive data on bird behavior around the turbines.

These systems had to overcome challenges like noise from waves and rain. Despite these hurdles, the data showed that only a small fraction of recordings actually captured bird activity, indicating that birds were not frequently near the turbines.

Study Findings and Collision Details

The study found that out of 299 bird recordings within the turbine blade area, only six collisions occurred, all during the daytime. This suggests that birds often make last-minute maneuvers to avoid collisions.

Additionally, the results showed that most birds that approached the turbines either changed their path or flew parallel to the blades instead of passing through, reducing the risk of collision.
